Fernando Ferrera

"I was born in Minas Gerais in 1957. Even as a child, I showed a vocation for drawing, portraying picturesque situations of everyday life, civic events and scenes from my father's store. I worked and studied in Rio de Janeiro in the Society of Fine Arts.

"In 1984, I decided to return to my home town where I still live today. I set up my workshop, where I painted some pictures. One day I found myself observing a craft object from the region made of wood and I tried to make something similar. I perceived my ability in molding the material and I ventured into sculpting in papier maché. It was a success. I then adapted the technique to my works and each piece was a surprise. These days I make the first piece of clay or wood and then move on to paper in order to achieve the best form of reproduction for my craft pieces. The material makes this possible.

"In my workshop today, I create pieces with the most varied techniques, works with expressive social focus, with themes of interpersonal relationships, or even the culture of the everyday Brazilian life."
